By Aurora Ferrer

Master Roland Ferrer's Kick Dr. Series
With 43 years of experience in competitive Taekwondo, both Open Style Tournaments and World Taekwondo Federation Tournaments, 24 years of experience in Kickboxing and Muay Thai and 27 years of coaching/training state, national, international and olympic athletes, Roland has the experience few teachers have. In his Kick Dr. Series, Roland shares his 43 plus years of martial arts experience in multiple styles and systems with the focus on kicking. His mastery is in being able to develop and teach the offensive, defensive and strategic application of any kicking technique.

He is an effective and encouraging instructor, asking the most from his students at the same time making sure he gives them the skills to succeed.

About Roland's Kick Dr. Series in his own words: Why my Kick Dr. Series?
"The Kick Dr, Series is about developing your kicks to their full potential and making your newly acquired repertoire of kicks an integral part of your fighting vocabulary. As they say 'knowledge is power'. The more knowledge you acquire in any subject the more power and confidence you'll have in it. The tools, techniques and application from my 43 plus years of experience will give you an edge whether it be for training fighters, prize fighting, street self-defense or for serious martial arts enthusiasts." The Art of Kicking" in under utilized in the MMA world but is now starting to emerge.  Having spent  my entire martial arts career kicking, my understanding of this range is second nature and my ability to apply the most sophisticated kicks in the MMA arena is my niche.

Private Coaching for Athlete Development
These are one on one training sessions for athletes training for martial arts competitions. Privates focus on creating winning fighting strategies through developing an effective offensive and defensive repertoire tailored for the individual's strengths and abilities. We can also create specific strategies for individual opponents and/or competitions. Master Ferrer also works with coaches and trainers to help them develop their athletes to their full potential.

About PaaMano Eskrima Workshops

By Aurora Ferrer

Punong Guro Roland Ferrer created and founded this style in 1992.  PaaMano Eskrima literally translated means "Hand Foot Skirmish".  The system is an interpretation of many Martial Arts Systems, Concepts and Techniques. Its foundation was created to support a learning progression from novice to expert.  The implements used are: single stick (solo baston), double stick (doble baston), stick/sword and knife (espada y daga), daga (knife), empty hand (hands, feet, elbows, knees, head), sayaw (dance &: forms).  Our system was created to honor the Warrior and Artist Ancestors of the Philippines. PaaMano Eskrima is as practical as it is beautiful. Master Ferrer has worked with Law Enforcement on hand to hand combat as well as advanced baton training. He also teaches workshops and seminars to Master Instructors and Filipino Martial Arts enthusiasts from all over the World.

Black Belt Alumni Class Feb 2015

By Aurora Ferrer

We are looking forward to our upcoming Black Belt Alumni (BBA) Class this Sat., Feb 28 at 1:30pm. This class is open to all Kadan & PaaMano Eskrima Black Belts regardless of physical fitness level or current physical ability. The BBA Class is open for as much or as little physical participation as inspired. Our BBA are free to bring a donation and either participate in class or visit and reconnect.

The main goal of our monthly class is to re-inspire our inner Black Belt by giving back and by reconnecting to the 5 tenants of Taekwondo 1. Courtesy 2. Integrity 3. Perseverance 4. Self-control and 5. Indomitable Spirit and the most important Kadan Black Belt tenants of all "Living with the attitude of gratitude and Think globally and act locally". Our monthly get-togethers are about being of service, reconnecting with old friends, making new ones and putting good-works into action.

As many of you know our family is all about adopting shelter and rescue animals. We have three shelter dogs ourselves. (You can learn more about our first foster story on the I Love Shelter Dogs Blog.)  The organization we are helping this month is Doggy Hydeaway Rescue Rehab in Valley Center, CA. They are an amazing organization dedicated to helping dogs that have been through challenges and traumatic experiences find their balance, relax and learn to be happy healthy dogs again. They also work with rescues. They are committed to rehabilitating and helping find homes for dogs that would other wise have no other options. You can take a look at some of the adorable dogs that are looking for their forever homes here http://www.doggyhydeaway.com/Adoptable_Dogs.php

Doggy Hydeaway

"Doggy Hydeaway Rescue Rehab
is a home-based facility specializing in behavior rehabilitation, modification and socialization.  We are located on a beautiful 10 acre property in Valley Center CA. Our rural setting provides a completely natural habitat where a stressed out dog can decompress in a quiet atmosphere. There is ample shade throughout the property due to an abundance of trees. We also have a fully enclosed swimming pool which provides a great way to keep cool in the summer months, or for a no impact way of exercising dogs with arthritis or hip issues." We are asking for donations of blankets or/and Diamond Natural Lamb & Rice Kibble.

Remember you don't need to train in class to participate in the #KadanBBA class, the studio is open to those that want to participate by stopping by with a donation and a visit as well. We'll even have some seats outside for the Black Belts that want to support with a donation and a visit instead of training. It's all about connection and giving back. We hope you'll be inspired to join us, you'll be helping a great organization and we'd love to see you.

Black Belt Alumni Class

A Kadan and PaaMano Eskrima Black Belt is a four year commitment. We are grateful to our Black Belts for sharing a minimum of four years of their lives with us. Their contribution to the legacy of Kadan Martial Arts and PaaMano Eskrima is undeniable. As a heart-felt thank you we are offering our Black Belt Alumni Classes for FREE.

One of the most important aspects of our Black Belt test is "giving back or paying it forward" by assisting/creating community services projects and volunteering to help those in need. In keeping with our Black Belt philosophy we've decided donate our time and to offer our Black Belt Alumni Classes for no monetary fee. We will however ask for donations to the charity highlighted that month. We will provide a list of charities and their corresponding months so our BB Alumni will know what type of donations to bring. This month (January) we will be asking for donations of canned or non-perishable foods for the Los Angels Food Bank.

We know life takes many different paths so we've developed the class to accommodate for all fitness levels. Our goal is to provide a positive and challenging environment that promotes personal growth, mental vitality, and physical fitness.

January's class will consist of warm up, shield kicking drills, mitt punching drills, footwork, slips and distance training. We will close class with paddle ball matches.

We look forward to reconnecting, breaking a sweat and sharing what we love...the martial arts!
Don't miss the first Black Belt Alumni Class of 2015.

Letter to Police Officer, Firefighter and Military Personnel

Dear So Cal Peace Officer, Fire Fighter & Military Personnel,

I first want to thank you for being of service to our communities. You face potential life-threatening dangers everyday so that the rest of us don’t need to.

Last week I had a Police Officer visit my studio and ask about practical hands-on self-defense classes for himself. When I asked him why he wanted to learn and train in these techniques he answered, “Because I have a family and I’d like to come home to them”. Being a family man myself, my heart went out to him. I promised to work with him on his days off.

His visit got me to thinking about all the brave people serving and it  inspired me to begin offering special hands-on/reality-based classes open only to active or retired Peace Officers, Fire Fighters and Military Personnel. They are special weekly training classes offered at Kadan Martial Arts. I share techniques and practical applications with this class that I am unable to do with the general public or even my advanced martial arts students.

Because I want those in service to be able to apply these self-defense techniques in high stress situations, muscle memory is key in the training. Seminars and workshops are fine for general info and for basic application but I’ve learned through 30+ years of coaching and training Olympic Athletes that there is NO substitution for repetition and consistency in training. The only way we can be sure that our bodies will react effectively and efficiently in high stress is by practicing a technique or combination often enough that our brain no longer needs to think because our body knows what to do automatically.

If you are interested in participating and/or know other Peace Officers, Fire Fighters and Military that would be interested please email KJNFerrer@gmail.com.

Thank you once again for all you do and may you always, safely, find your way home,

Master Roland Ferrer

About Roland Ferrer's Men's Martial Flow

By Aurora Ferrer

Master Roland Ferrer has developed a unique program for men called Men's Martial Flow. He combines his 42 years of martial arts experience with the latest in exercises for longevity, proprioception and conditioning. Master Ferrer is in his 50s. While he still suffers from numerous injuries acquired throughout his 25+ years competing in the martial arts, he has retained much of his martial arts ability, flexibility and strength.

In this program he shares what he has learned and practiced over the years and how he's been able to retain so much of his physical ability. His vitality has given him the opportunity to continue training and coaching top level martial arts competitors well into his middle age. Drawing from his own experiences and adding the newest longevity and strengthening exercises makes this a program unlike any other he has ever offered.

Master Ferrer attributes his physical longevity in the martial arts to a combination of important factors and has incorporated these six factors into his Men's Martial Flow (MMF) program.
1. A lifelong dedication to the martial arts ("Life requires movement." Aristotle )
2. Facing ones fears ("The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." Joseph Campbell)
3. Being 100% responsible (There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. Albert Einstein)
4. Keeping an empty cup (“Empty your cup so that it may be filled; become devoid to gain totality.” Bruce Lee)
5. An attitude of gratitude ("Trade your expectations for appreciation and the world changes instantly." Tony Robbins)
6. Laugh (With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die. Abraham Lincoln)

Men's Martial Flow (MMF) is dedicated to helping students develop practical and applicable self-defense skills by providing invigorating workouts, challenging preconceived limitations, and special "muscle memory" training drills. There is no previous martial arts training required but students must possess a desire to train in an intense yet respectful environment and maintain a positive attitude. The classes are setup to accommodate for beginning to advanced fitness levels. The Program is open to participants 18 years and older by invitation only. (If you are interested in training in MMF but have not trained with Master Ferrer or with any of his students then please email Master Ferrer at KJNFerrer@gmail.com

Here is a clip of Master Ferrer teaching one of the techniques and drills he teaches in MMF.
